The troops are assembled and ready for paint.
That's about 3 months painting right there, see you all in June some time.

I spy with my little eye something beginning with "F". "Flamethrowers!"
Welcome to the Darkside! Mwahahaha!

Yep, 3 of 'em, plus shotguns, multiple BARs, and as many additional pistols as I'm allowed.
More than a whiff of 'fromage' in this force!
I started reading the Osprey book on the USMC in WW2 last night, and I almost wish I had used the Springfield rifles rather than the Garands and gone for an early war force as the vehicles used at the start were so much more interesting. AT guns and howitzers mounted in half tracks and a light AT gun on the back of a little 4x4 truck. So much more fun than another Sherman.
I might just have to get some anyway, and I would only have to swop out about 12 guys to turn it into an early war force, and maybe get the older style MMG.

Doesn't smell the slightest bit cheesy to me. It is a US Marine force. They used a lot of flamethrowers.
If we want to compete on a level playing field with the Bunker Monkey and TCOW guys we are going to have to toughen up our army lists.
We could play our usual style lists at the club and save the hard lists for the events.
Just been on Easy Army working out a new list for the club. Five order dice, thirteen models and just two to paint with three weeks to go. Want to get three vehicles painted by then and bring at least two lists.

Yeah, I wouldn't have put the list together like this if it wasn't slightly historical.
And in the back of my mind I was thinking of all these 'new' players jumping in on the game when I wrote it up. Which is a shame because I am more interested in fielding the unusual stuff, like the Light AT portee I've read about, than what I am going to end up with, which will be way more competitive, but not as cool.

I know some of those "new" players and they have been gaming a long while. They will be bringing their "A" game to any match. Trying to get the most out of their list as they can. I am going to try to do the same sort of thing I did with my Operation Citadel list. Pick out what I want to use then try to fit it into a theatre selector with as little adjustment as possible. With being a little low on funds, I am postponing my Finnish and Japanese lists and going to work on my two British lists that I already have most of the stuff. Looking forward to seeing what paint scheme you go with on the Marines. I use the Warlord paint sets to get an idea of the colours and the Artizan site for reference to the paint schemes. Here is a paint comparison chart: www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

I am actually using a painting guide from BA.net. I was working out a colour scheme using the paint I already had, you can see the colour swatches in the above picture, when my wife surprised me with a birthday present of the paint I needed. She had seen me write down the Vallejo colours, 'borrowed' my list, and done a sneaky order with mighty ape. So I am using Vallejo paint for the 1st time.
I have sprayed everything black, which is my usual undercoat, and this evening started a couple of test models, just uniform, webbing, and helmet cover base colours so far, with a wash of Strong Tone Ink. I've never used this ink before either, its so different to my GW inks, which are 20 years old, its excellent stuff. Honestly, I blocked the colours and the base skin tone, inked it, and thought to myself - Done! Tabletop standard right there. Talk about a quick way of churning out an army.
I highlighted one model with the base colour again and left it at that. And I think that's the stage I will try and get everything to before I move on to the further 2 highlights. It is perfectly good enough to play with.
I also put together my 2 plastic Shermans, both are very good, I think the Rubicon one might see service in the Pacific, while the Italeri one will be assigned to the ETO. If I had to pick a favourite, I would chose the Rubicon (3 variant choices!) but if you just want a regular 75mm Sherman the Italeri is nearly half the price, and comes with glue, paint and a brush, and for the money saved you could get the 105mm turret from Company B and have a 2nd turret to swop out as the mood takes you, which you cant do with the Rubicon one. So maybe the Italeri is the better buy?

Dark, blurry photos I'm afraid, but I don't know the best settings for artificial light close up photography. However you can clearly see I have basecoat on the uniform for everyone, and have a test model up to the mid point. It will get a further 2 highlights on the uniform, webbing, and flesh, and a single highlight in the helmet cover, plus some camo. By my standards this is racing along.

Looking good so far.
I have heard good thing about the Strong Toe stuff but not used it myself. It looks quite a deep green so far but yet to get highlights.
A very cool present from your good lady. What a lovely thing to do.

Yes it is quite a dark green, but thats what the guide called for, and 2 more highlights will make a difference.
The strong tone is a revelation, I now know how people are able to produce something halfway decent so much faster than me.
Its made me reassess my decision not to do a german army, I didnt fancy highlighting field grey as I had no premixed triad available, but now, block colours, strong tone ink, highlight with base colour again and thats a tabletop standard force mostly done. I might yet get to play with some Panzers.

Some dastardly Jerrys who think they can take on my Brits, what?
Strong Tone has a slight brown hint. I have heard Dark Tone works better on the German grey uniforms. Used Nuln Oil myself.

Its been about 3 weeks since I started colouring in these guys, I did have the inlaws staying for a week, which means no painting time for me (to much time spent hiding in the bedroom) but I am making progress. Very random progress. There is absolutely no method, I'm just applying whatever colour is open to whatever model is closest, so it feels like I'm not getting anywhere.
This is the stage I think I will be aiming to get everything to initially. This is just prior to mixing colours for highlights (actually this one still needs work on the webbing to get to that stage).
What do we think of the base? I was going for a coral sand look, but I don't know what to add to it. Light brown/beige tufts or static grass? Green tufts? I don't seem to be able to find 28mm seashells anywhere.....

With the white coral sand a blue/green grass or dry light brown grass might beach feel rather than the usual green.
