Ive been trying to create a list for this upcoming 750 tournament, the Elerslie hobbymaster championship, Ive just been thinking how best to utilise a flame thrower team in the list.
Im main quandary is whether to include one as part of a team of 7 assault engineers with 4 smgs for a real killy unit given a truck to ride. Or instead make them a seperate team to ride with 6 Assault engineers in the same truck, but generating their own order dice and not being a part.
ive found that the engineers that include the flamer have almost been overkill in what they do in my games with them. If they shoot, the flamer does all the work, there is little need for the smgs, if they want to assault, the flamer is practically useless.
A vet flamer team is 65 points
6 vet assault engineers with 6 smgs and a pzf is 101 points
If i was to add the flamer to that team id remove a smg and add a man for 131 points, thats a 34 point difference in price and minus an order dice.
What do you guys think? the smg flamer unit a great combo, cheaper and more men to burn... Or is it over kill and worth paying 35 points more for the extra order dice and the abillity to shoot / assault / be shot by different things.

1st thing - I've never run a flamethrower of any kind in any game, but have had them used against me in many.
You have pretty good arguments both ways. But you haven't mentioned 'survivability' at all. A 2 man team is much easyier to get rid of with small arms than a 6-7 man unit who also have a FT included. You will need to protect a 2 man team much more. I personally would try separate units in the same truck, run them like 1 big squad, but with the troops in front of the FT team until its flamey death time. Extra order dice is always good.

I have used the infantry FTs in a lot of German lists, both on their own and in pioneer units. I definitely prefer to embed them in a veteran unit rather than leave them on their own.
The FT units extra order dice is nice but it doesn't make up for all the advantages of the pioneer unit.
On its own it costs 65 points for the vet version. Inside a vet unit it costs 46 points (two vets + FT). If the lone FT gets shot or assaulted it will die. The pioneer unit will absorb the shooting casualties and probably win an assault.
If the lone FT runs out of fuel the whole unit and order dice is removed. If the pioneer FT runs out only the guy carrying the FT is removed.
Not many countries get the option of taking FTs inside units. I will be taking advantage of this on Sunday with my Germans.
